FEMALE PRISONER SCORPION: BEAST STABLE (1973)

Subtle horror allusion
Stoic!
Genuinely emotional falling matches...

Title: Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable
Year: 1973
Director: Shunya Ito
Format: Blu-ray
Label: Arrow Video

Notes: The third film in the FEMALE PRISONER SCORPION series is another change in the formula as prison is (mostly) left behind and Scorpion tries to survive an urban hell whilst on the run. The film feels like a psychological thriller crossed with a horror (Beast Stable is a literal hint). The fantastic elements are dialled down a little though and the film feels grittier than its predecessors. So, a bit more serious, but there are still plenty of grotesque characters to enjoy. Scorpion's character moves on quite a bit in this film, developing a proper friendship and getting involved with righteous feminist issues. Despite being on the run there is a good visual and thematic call-back to her recurrent imprisonment. A strong finish for the director.
