Title: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Year: 1975
Director: Miloš Forman
Format: Blu-ray
Label: Warner Home Video

Notes: I finally got around to watching this after recently reading the superb novel. This adaptation mixes up the source quite a bit but keeps things broadly right. Jack Nicholson is just about perfect as McMurphy and his performance is justifiably lauded. Having seen stills I was a bit surprised by the casting of Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched (looks too pleasant) but as the film proceeds she turns in a perfect performance that really works. Some of most fascinating passages in the book come from Chief's inner voice and it's a shame to lose these in the film. The Chief is mute to the viewer and hardly part of the drama until the tragic conclusion. The loss of this aspect results in a film that is more mundane than the somewhat out-there novel. Despite this, it's clearly a very impressive adaptation that's paced well and not overlong.
