Grotesque Les clones Fantasia Title: La Cité des Enfants Perdus Year: 1995 Director: Marc Caro / Jean-Pierre Jeunet Format: Blu-ray Label: Studiocanal Notes: I didn't get a chance to see this when it was first released so this viewing was my first chance to see this cult fantasy, from the days when steampunk wasn't so ubiquitous in popular culture. I did know about the film at the time it was released because, if I remember rightly, it was referenced in a review of a similar-looking computer game. It's that sort of aesthetic. I was a bit hesitant to watch the film after all this time in case the twee legacy of Jeunet's later film AMÉLIE soured the experience. That would be unfair and fortunately it didn't. While this film has a similar unreal look, I prefer a grimy looking dystopia to pretty France. BABY LOVE (1968)

Dreams Steamy Looking Title: Baby Love Year: 1968 Director: Alastair Reid Format: DVD Label: Network Notes: This is the first film I've watched as a consequence of reading Simon Matthews' treasure trove of obscure films Psychedelic Celluloid. His book covers films from 1965-1974 with some link to the groovy music scene of the period. In BABY LOVE the link is Katch 22 , a psyche band too obscure to be on Wikipedia, who provide some pretty average tunes during a discotheque sequence. Expect more films on this blog from the book because I enjoyed this slightly sleazy experience quite a bit... BABY LOVE is a provocative sexploitation story about a teenage girl who witnesses her mother's suicide and is subsequently taken in by a family who she then appears to seduce one by one. I write 'appears' because one of the redeeming features of this fairly grotty film is the suggestion that Luci isn't really to blame for the chaos she causes...

THE BLUE DAHLIA (1946)

A fool rushes in Interference A low trick Title: The Blue Dahlia Year: 1946 Director: George Marshall Format: Blu-ray Label: Arrow Academy Notes: A film noir I bought on spec due to the involvement of screenwriter Raymond Chandler and the fact this edition was published by the excellent Arrow Academy. Unfortunately it's only a moderately successful example of the genre despite entertaining throughout and looking pretty stylish with it. Both leads were apparently cast for their chemistry and this is evident once they meet. However the stand out character for me is Buzz (William Bendix) with his unsubtly alluded to brain damage and related quirks. There are no real spoilers in saying he helps keep the red herrings and twists flow throughout the search for an explanation to the death of the film's femme fatale. It is the mystery of the unsolved murder that maintains dramatic interest until we finally learn the killer's identify but I think the fil...

L'AVENIR [THINGS TO COME] (2016)

Outside Learning Arcadia Title: L'avenir Year: 2016 Director: Mia Hansen-Løve Format: Blu-ray Label: Curzon Artificial Eye Notes: This contemporary drama is something a bit different to the usual classics and genre cinema covered in this blog. I'm keen to make sure I don't miss too much of modern cinema in my apparent quest to appreciate all of cinema's rich history. Besides, THINGS TO COME stars Isabelle Huppert and I've felt the peer pressure to see something she's in! The film tells the story of philosophy academic Nathalie as her satisfied and rewarding life declines in the time-honoured way of middle-aged women blessed with an egotistical husband, elderly mother and younger colleagues. Her story is sad and she is treated poorly but she never completely snaps. There seems to be an ennui of the privileged that precludes any chance of a meltdown. DER MÜDE TOD [DESTINY] (1921)

Divine Magic Destiny Title: Der müde Tod [Destiny] Year: 1921 Director: Fritz Lang Format: Blu-ray Label: Masters of Cinema Notes: An early Fritz Lang film that impresses with it's expressionistic beauty and technical achievements but, to me at least, falls a bit short of being a masterpiece. The portrayal of Death incarnate has obviously been influential but my favourite thing about this character was Lang initially suggesting his malevolence only to later reveal he was actually serving a holy and necessary service. I don't know what Lang's religious views were but DER MÜDE TOD seems a devout film. The framing device of bargaining with death allows three separate stories of futility to be told. This clearly mimics the structure of D. W. Griffith's 1916 film INTOLERANCE, although the earlier film used interleaved stories instead of the serial verse format used by Lang. Perhaps the relative brevity of DER MÜDE TOD made parallelism...
