Title: Hell Comes to Frogtown
Year: 1988
Director: R.J. Kizer / Donald G. Jackson
Format: Blu-ray
Label: Arrow Video
Notes: A cult but fairly average post-apocalyptic film (how many were made in the 1980s?!) which is primarily interesting for the casting of pro-wrestler Roddy Piper and the distinctive costumes for the villainous frog mutants.
The story begins with an unexpected feminist slant as women capture and enslave Roddy to pro-create on behalf of the government. An ok promise but this turns out to be nothing much more than an excuse for Roddy to get it on with his alluring guards.
The film is reasonably funny and I enjoyed it for 80 minutes. The journey towards Frogtown in the first half is the best part of the film but the no-budget realisation of the froggers' home is a bit of a let-down - it's just a ruined factory with some neon, ripping on the Mos Eisley cantina and elements of Mad Max. That said the costumes for the mutant frogs are quite attractive despite being about as realistic as the live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The final Mad Max homage - a car chase after a harem of fertile women - is let down a bit by only involving two cars! Not exactly a fury road.
