Title: The Champion
Year: 1915
Director: Charlie Chaplin
Format: Blu-ray
Label: BFI

Notes: This Essanay is actually pretty good. It starts with Charlie having lunch with his animal co-star which just happens to be a bulldog. I've done my research and it appears the boxer dog was bred from bulldogs. A-ha, I see what you've done here Mr Chaplin! Very soon, Charlie ends up sparring with a fearsome boxer (human) and the action ensues.

Charlie's dubious victory over the boxer and subsequent elevation to contender drives the film with plenty of time for fisticuffs, acrobatic clowning around in the training gym and an extended bout with the champion to conclude the film. The fight is genuinely good and holds the attention through multiple rounds. I'm looking forward to watching this short again, not something you say about every silent comedy!
