Title: Christmas Vacation
Year: 1989
Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik
Format: Blu-ray
Label: Warner Bros.

Notes: The third National Lampoon film dispenses with the road-trip format used in the first two and might be the third best of the series, depending on how much affection you have for EUROPEAN VACATION.

Your opinion of CHRISTMAS VACATION, in which Chevy Chase's Clark Griswold attempts to host the perfect family Christmas, will probably be determined by whether you enjoy the typical Chevy Chase character - a wise-cracking smartass. Actually Clark is a bit more interesting as he alternates between trying to be a genuinely thoughtful family man and a crazed jerk. The pressure of being the perfect father I suppose!

The plot doesn't really need mentioning. Almost every scene is a sketch or vignette in which Chase either brings the laughs with a Christmas-related accident or makes a mildly risqué quip. Good seasonal entertainment with plenty of comic turns from the fine cast. One note on the cast - I read recently that it was always planned to have different actors play the Griswold children in each film rather than a practical necessity. Not sure how true this is but I liked a small moment in the film in which Clark alludes to Rusty being half the age and height of his previous portrayal by looking down in confusion and exclaiming "oh there you are!". That's how I read that anyway...
