Title: The Bank
Year: 1915
Director: Charlie Chaplin
Format: Blu-ray
Label: BFI
Notes:
Better than THE TRAMP? Probably. Chaplin seems to have really progressed with this short and the film is something a bit better than a just series of slapstick scenes. It looks better too - I don't know if it was shot on location or just with much better sets, but it's more polished than the usual three creaking walls you see in early silent comedies.
Most of the best laughs are in the first half. The opening sequence climaxes with a brilliant sight gag making the most of the elaborate set of the bank. Some typical slapstick battling between rival janitors ensues. The film then turns into romance, with a good (but obvious now) twist and some pathos.
