Title: Work
Year: 1915
Director: Charlie Chaplin
Format: Blu-ray
Label: BFI
Notes: Another excellent Essanay Chaplin in which Charlie is the lowest grade worker in a team of rather clumsy decorators.
The opening skit has Chaplin dragging the work cart as a human mule and provides some rather slow-looking near-misses with a streetcar as well as a bit of camera trickery to give the effect of moving up a very steep gradient! (see first screenshot)
The remainder of the film chronicles the inevitably disastrous attempt to wallpaper a busy house. The wallpaper glue is viscous, white, and very prominent as the job becomes increasingly messy. No-one is spared. Watching this unfold I eventually realised that the classic British sitcom 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' was reworking ideas that were rather dated even in 1973!
