Title: Tartüff
Year: 1925
Director: F. W. Murnau
Format: Blu-ray
Label: Masters of Cinema
Notes: A play within a play, or rather a film within a film. I've no prior knowledge of Molière's play (for shame) so came to this with fresh eyes, except for expectations about the expressionism of Murnau. The result is another quite impressive but ultimately minor Murnau film with some flourishes, an unusual framing device and only one really hugely memorable scene (Tartuff's lucky escape shown in the 3rd capture above). The main theme of hypocritical religious leaders still endures and this adaption is an amusing satire.
The restoration quality is good and as it's from an American print I was amused to see an English-language prop used as the film within a film is introduced by the actor. Multiple takes for different markets - they were pros back then!
