Title: Die Finanzen des Großherzogs
Year: 1924
Director: F. W. Murnau
Format: Blu-ray
Label: Masters of Cinema
Notes: A sprightly comedy about the misfortunes of a broke Mediterranean grand duke. Full of typical silent comedy features like slapstick, sight gags, animal co-stars and mistaken identities that cause hilarious consequences. In truth, not something I'm likely to return to anytime soon but it's nice to see Murnau do something different to his usual style.
It's also a bit of a shame that this edition is based on such an old restoration. There's visible damage throughout the entire film. More annoyingly, there are visible splice marks whenever an intertitle appears and disappears which becomes distracting quite quickly (see below for a example). I'm not sure if this a faithful reproduction of how the film was originally edited or something that added as part of the restoration but it certainly makes you grateful for the clean re-created intertitles you see on a lot of contemporary silent restorations.
